Like most people I dream about building my own home. In South Australia vacant plots are abundant and therefore land is available for sale. The only problem is that if you really want something truly bespoke then that can be very expensive. This is illustrated in television programs like Grand Designs. The owners effectively start the process with a set budget and then spend over twice or three times as much. It is easy to relate to this because there are many unknown quantities involved with these type of projects. It is also human nature that people want the absolute finest fixtures and fittings.

A few months ago whilst doing research for a book I am writing I discovered the talents of Nico van der Meulen Architects, who are based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The company was originally launched in 1984 by Nico van der Meulen and his wife Santa. However, the business has massively evolved and now employs many designers. They are also recognized internationally for their well conceived innovative residential homes including the phenomenal Kloof Road residence.

Kloof Road is a substantial single family home designed by Werner van der Meulen and situated at the foot of a nature reserve in the picturesque location of Bedfordview, Johannesburg. This property is massive by normal standards and has 1,100 square metres of luxurious accommodation. Originally a modest single story dwelling occupied this plot before Nico van der Meulen Architects completely transformed this site. The clients brief was to design a residence that was practical for indoor and outdoor living. Certainly the end result is pretty astonishing and the design is a modern sculptural masterpiece.

Internally the home has an exceptionally spacious modernistic appearance. To create this effect Nico van der Meulen Architects have used many contemporary materials like steel, polished concrete and glass. However, the house certainly isn’t sterile and has a warm inviting charm to it. This is further enhanced by the inclusion of some wonderful artwork and high quality furniture.
