When we originally relocated as family to Adelaide we befriended a recently retired couple in their early sixties. On numerous occasions we shared a meal and conversations with them. We had a lot in common because we were all British Nationals. However, as they had grown up sons living in Melbourne it was inevitable that they would eventually leave. Sadly, the day came quicker than expected and they made the move to the beautiful Mornington Peninsula. This spectacular region is located in the state of Victoria, which is also home to Bass & Flinders Distillery.
Over the last few weeks I have been doing extensive research for a series of articles featuring craft gin producers. With the exception of New Zealand company (Dancing Sands Distillery) all of the brands are based in Australia. As this is such a fascinating subject I am trying to convince my publisher in Pennsylvania to produce an international book. I feel by expanding the concept this would really resonate with global readers.
Bass & Flinders Distillery was originally established in 2009 by close friends Wayne Klintworth and Bob Laing. With a combined passion for craft spirits and fine botanicals they saw a niche in the market for a craft distillery within the region. In 2016 Bob sadly passed away and Wayne’s daughter came onboard to continue his legacy. Using traditional Alembic Copper Pot Stills, the company produces a range of high quality spirits including award winning gins. These are manufactured in very small batches and contain only the premium natural native ingredients.
Generously Bass & Flinders sent me four delectable gins from the range (Angry Ant, Cerise, Monsoon Gin and Gin 10). All of these spirits are carefully blended to optimize the beautiful natural flavor tones. I was fortunate enough to speak with both Holly and Wayne Klintworth who both seem really committed to crafting exquisite gourmet products for discerning clientele.
As well as making wonderful tasting spirits Bass & Flinders also run a gin Masterclass ($140). This amazingly unique experience lasts two hours and explains the meticulous techniques involved in the crafting process. As well as receiving a 500ml bottle of your choice there are extensive tasting sessions and a delicious cheese platter included in the price.
