H.I.D. Watch T1D1 (Type 1 / Design 1)

Recently I was discussing design with a progressive local (Adelaide based) architect called Luke Jones from C4 Architects. Working for a broad spectrum of clients (with massively different budgets) it is integral they arrive at the best solution. Ultimately where costs are a serious consideration (the majority of cases) involves a huge amount of creatively to achieve the optimum aesthetic. Certainly, bespoke details can transform a project from a generic box into something much more special. The same can be said about watchmaking and especially in the current climate.

Originally I mainly focused on exclusive watchmakers like MB & F, Urwerk, De-Bethune, Cabestan etc. because their designs were avant-garde. However, within a few years, many other small micro brands are creating some extraordinary timepieces. A great example can be found in Hong Kong-based company H.I.D. (Heritage Innovative Design) Watch. The business was founded by the multi-talented Eric So in 2017. I was delighted to get my hands on their debut T1D1 (Type 1 / Design 1) model a few days ago.

Even though I am originally from England, I would consider Adelaide as my home. By coincidence, this is where Eric So went to University, school, and college. Subsequently, Eric relocated to Hong Kong and launched a magazine called Spiral, which was published on a monthly basis and specifically focused on watches. Therefore, we realized that there was a lot of common ground as I too have created several timepieces and write about horology. Ultimately it seemed only natural that I should feature his wonderful T1D1 on Total Design Reviews.

As well as managing his own brand H.I.D. Eric also is the brand representative for MB & F in the Hong Kong and Macau region. Clearly, this must have influenced him to create his own watches. The T1D1 certainly isn’t in the same price bracket as Max Busser’s complications. However, for a watch retailing at around $770 I feel you are getting great value for money. If you want an affordable timepiece with an enormous amount of character the T1D1 is definitely worth consideration.

The T1D1 is supplied in a high-quality case with an additional bronze colour interchangeable bezel (with unique locking system). I opted for the all black Forged carbon fiber model because it suits the style of watch. However, to create an entirely different aesthetic is a relatively simple process. Essentially you need to remove the strap as that acts as a (patented) secondary lock for the outer case. Other details include a distinctive façade inspired by the dashboard of classic Corvette C1 cars from the 1960s. A central dial display seconds (tachometer format) central dial, whilst hours and minutes are presented in a retrograde style. Powering the watch is a 21-jewel manufacture self-winding movement, which oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 VPH and has an impressive power reserve of 80-hours.
