Last month I published a review featuring Urwerk’s magnificent UR-111C. The timepiece is engineered and designed to the meticulous standards you would expect from the brand. It also is bang on trend because of the futuristic aesthetic, which was inspired by Science fiction movies. Certainly, anyone who is passionate about fine horology would love to own a watch of this calibre. However, respected industry specialist Sophy Rindler (in response to my post) posed the question about the relevance of these novelties in the modern world. Ultimately I feel she was alluding to the $134,370 price tag that is beyond the realms of most people’s budgets. In contrast, many renowned Swiss labels are launching stylish affordable timepieces on crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter. A great example can be found in Louis Chevrolet Watch Classic 8.
Over the last few months, I have been liaising with Louis Chevrolet’s Sales and Marketing manager Florent Bregnard. He informed me of the imminent release (28th September 2018) of a fantastic timepiece they were about to launch on Kickstarter. The watch in question is called the Classic 8 and early bird buyers are being offered very attractive incentives. If you back the campaign you can purchase one of these superb Swiss mechanical watches at a 40% discounted price of CHF 590 (approximately $610). Personally, I would recommend consumers to reserve one of these pieces immediately because they will definitely sell out quickly.
Normally I chose to wear massively oversized watches to make a really bold statement. However, this strategy has its drawbacks because they can only be worn with certain outfits. Ultimately, that is why dress watches like the Classic 8 are appealing to a broad demographic. This timepiece has an elegant contoured 316L stainless steel case that measures 43mm in diameter. These proportions mean that it can be sported with a dinner suit or more casual attire.
Aesthetically Louis Chevrolet have developed a simple but very effective concept. The Classic 8 is anything but generic and has a lot of visual flair. For example, the multi-layered dial (available in black, brown or blue) with exposed elements of the date wheel. Other features include diamond shape hour/minute hands and distinctive central markers (3, 6, 9, 12 o’clock). As a perfect finishing touch the watch is equipped with a customised 25-jewel ETA 2824-2 self-winding movement. This mechanism has a power reserve of 40-hours and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. It is also pertinent to mention the timepiece is water resistant to a depth of 100-metres.
