The Harry Winston name is synonymous with fine jewelry all around the world. His transformation of diamonds into art is legendary & will always be embedded in the passage of time. In 1989 the company diversified its interests & ventured into the world of Haute Horlogerie with incredible ease. Over the last few years the company has collaborated with some of the most avant-garde watchmakers & visionaries including the wonderful Maximillian Büsser. The results have been remarkable especially the aesthetically beautiful & innovative Opus collection.
There’s a real buzz about trying on a watch with a Tourbillon movement especially one made by Harry Winston & limited to only 40 pieces. The Midnight Tourbillion GMT is quite a classical looking watch in contrast to some of the company’s creations. The model I was privileged to wear was the 18k Rose gold version. Instantly I was hypnotized by the luxuriously rich tones of this highly polished beauty. Also I was surprised how comfortable & lightweight the piece was to wear. The MT GMT measures 45mm (which by todays standard isn’t a particularly large watch) and that I believe is integral to the understated charm of the piece. In my opinion this is a exclusive piece brought out for special occasions rather than an everyday piece, but that might be stating the obvious.
Personally I love the styling of the off-centered time display dials providing center stage for the exposed tourbillon. The watch also packs a mean punch when it comes to features as well. There’s two time displays positioned at 3 o’clock (primary) & 9 o’clock (world-time) There is also a day/night indicator & reference city indicator working in conjunction with world-time display. It is also notable to mention the MT GMT has a phenomenal power reserve of 110 hours. This complex mechanism has 34 rubies & operates at a frequency of 28,800 alt./hour.
To use a quote from the manufacturer “The pure, finely balanced elegance of this unique model dedicated to a noble cause will doubtless appeal to collectors of fine watchmaking and who appreciate exceptional craftsmanship” I think this basically summarizes the charm of this piece.
The price of the Midnight Tourbillon GMT is $255,000.
