Wencia Swiss Classic W007AS

Normally the key to a successful business is the quality of the product and marketing ability. A lot of brands I speak to manufacture beautifully crafted timepieces but fail miserably in the self-promotion department. This could be for many reasons including budget, required expertise or confidence in these areas. That is why more and more watchmakers are employing public relations consultants to handle their communications. These specialists effectively act as a buffer between the watch labels and journalists like myself.

A few weeks ago I was introduced to a high quality brand called Wencia. The dynamic and entrepreneurial David Wenger owns the business. Initially (after a mining expedition in Mali and Guinea) he secured a career in the gem industry. This then led to a high profile appointment as a sales and marketing director within a successful Russian diamond exporter. Subsequently he gained a Gemologist qualification from the highly prestigious State University in Moscow. Now in his forties David has taken the helm of the Swiss watchmaking company his grandfather (Michel Wenger) established in 1937.

Presently Wencia has two exciting male collections called the Vaillant and Swiss Classic. Even though all the timepieces have a notable amount of design merit I opted to test the W007AS model from the Swiss Classic range of watches. The first thing that struck me when I received the timepiece was the size. Dimensionally this watch is tiny by comparison to other models I have recently reviewed and only has a 38mm diameter. Nevertheless I found the timepiece was exceptionally lightweight and comfortable to wear. Primarily this is down the elegant slim line case and choice of luxurious sterling silver in production. Realistically this watch could be worn for most occasions with the exception of maybe extreme sports.

Visually the Swiss Classic W007AS has a really attractive and formal appearance. I would say that this timepiece would appeal to admirers of luxury watchmakers like Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Jaeger-LeCoultre, A. Lange & Söhne, Paiget and Breguet. Although the price point of this dress watch is significantly less expensive than these haute horlogerie brands. What makes this timepiece so appealing is the highly polished Sterling Silver 925 case. I love the two-two black and grey sunray pattern etched brass dial. Other interesting features include raised silver Roman numerals, large second counter, small round date window (located at 3 o’clock) and sapphire crystal lens. Overall I think the composition is incredibly refined and the finishing is first rate.

Beneath the delicate exterior lies a Swiss Quartz Ronda 6004D quartz movement. I definitely prefer mechanical calibers but realise that due to the slim line profile of this watch a compromise had to made. Unfortunately off the shelf mechanisms are too large and would have changed the whole dynamic of the design. It is only luxury watchmakers that can afford to devise a bespoke piece to fit these exact requirements. Functionally the Swiss Classic W007AS features hours, minutes, large seconds and date indication. The timepiece also is water resistant to a depth of 30 metres.
