After many years in different occupations a good friend of mine has started painting again. He was always very talented and in 1990’s became a very successful illustrator. However certain factors made him pursue other interests and art was really left on the back burner. Fortunately, he now is working on a much larger scale and his subject matter has become a lot more interesting. In fact, he has done several works featuring characters from Star Wars and a really cool picture featuring a 1950’s style toy robot. Ultimately this prompted me to tell him about Azimuth and in particular their wonderful Mr Roboto wrist watch.
Recently Azimuth have released an entirely new collection of watches and completely revitalised their website. One of the new models is an updated version of the Mr Roboto aptly called Mr Roboto 2. A few months ago Alvin Lye (co-owner) showed me some 3D renderings on how the watch might appear. Certainly now I have seen this phenomenal timepiece in the metal I am delighted with the end result. Dimensionally this piece is also much larger than the original and measures 55mm x 47.5mm. However due to the innovative stainless steel case design it also feels very comfortable to wear.
Visually Mr Roboto 2 has a much more sophisticated appearance than its predecessor. The design is a lot more cohesive and generally the aesthetic is pleasing. I love the way Azimuth have merged the two portal sapphire windows that display hour and GMT functions. They have also redesigned the retrograde minute indication, which looks more refined. The inclusion of materials like forged carbon (on one of the versions) also add a touch of luxury to the watch.
Beneath the futuristic façade lies a modified Swiss automatic movement. The Calibre 1500.2 comprises 25-jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. This intricate mechanism is visible through the sapphire crystal exhibition case back. Functionally Mr Roboto 2 feature hours, retrograde minutes and GMT indication. The watch also has a power reserve of 40-hours and is water resistant to a depth of 30 metres.
Mr Roboto 2 is equipped with a high quality perforated black calf leather strap and matching steel folding clasp.
