As much as I love my work and feel privileged enough to write about exceptional design I also really look forward to enjoying holidays with my family. My wife is a senior doctor and sometimes her occupation can be very challenging. Her speciality is also very stressful so it is good to find a vacation that offers some form of relaxation. Saying that we enjoy activities such as nature walks, food foraging and absorbing stunning scenery. This is why Tasmania seemed like a really attractive proposition because it offers this in abundance. The weather in summer is also a lot milder than many of Australia’s other states.
In respect to accommodation there is nothing wrong with high quality hotels. However, if you do a bit of research and are prepared to venture off the beaten track you can really find something a bit more extraordinary. We hit lucky because we found a wonderful holiday home located in the picturesque town of Dover (which is the southernmost town of its kind in Australia) called Quarry Hill Lookout. This idyllic holiday spot is situated in the Huon Valley and is at a distance of approximately 77 kilometres from Hobart. Over the last few years this region has become increasingly popular and there are many boutique restaurants popping up. There are also many locals selling a range of homemade gourmet products like raw honey, Gravlax and a mind blowing Cherry spirit.
As you approach the house you realise that it has many notable architectural features. For example, the exterior of the property is clad in corrugated iron and hardwood, which has developed a unique silver patina. Once you enter the dwelling you are greeted by a wall of glass, which perfectly frames views of Port Esperance Bay. This magnificent retreat replaces a mid-20th century timber cottage and was originally built as high quality holiday accommodation. The present owner has significantly improved the residence by reconfiguring the internal layout and included many bespoke personal touches. These include a dramatic stone tiled feature wall, large wood burner and solid timber flooring.
Certainly I would recommend this phenomenal home and will definitely be paying a return visit in the very near future.
