Approximately two years ago I wrote a series of articles about craft gin. It’s an artisan beverage that really fascinated me and prompted me to devise a book concept. Even though two publishers loved my detailed synopsis they thought the subject was too niche. In fact, both editors thought craft gin mainly appealed to young hipsters in their late twenties/early thirties. Maybe at this time, they were correct, but I feel times have changed. Here are several of the original distillers I featured with exciting new variants.
Applewood Distillery
Applewood Distillery is located in the scenic Adelaide hills suburb of Gumeracha, in South Australia. Owner and Chief distiller Brendan Carter generously invited gave me a guided tour of the winery/distiller. Their primary objective is centred around sustainability and taking pride in Australian Culture. This why their high-quality spirits contain some of the finest locally sourced native botanical ingredients. Originally, I tested their signature gin but they have recently released Coral, Muntrie and Navy gins that are worth mentioning.

Impressively all the company’s refined spirits are meticulously handmade in copper pots and encapsulated with the finest native botanical ingredients. Popular varieties include the ‘Moore’s Signature Gin, Juniper and my personal favourite ‘Roots & Leaves’.

Shene Estate Distillery
Shene distillery is located on a historic estate located 30-minutes from Hobart in Tasmania. In 2006 head distiller David Kernke, wife Anne and daughter Myfanwy embarked on a huge challenge of reinstating the estate to its former glory. Today the Shene is renowned for making the finest Tasmanian Single Malt Whisky and only Tasmania’s only triple distilled variety. The company also crafts a delightful gin called Poltergeist, which won a Double Gold medal at 2017, 2018 and 2019, as well as Platinum in 2019 and 2020 at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Certainly, after testing this amazing gin it isn’t at all surprising.
