A few years ago I decided to start writing about fine timepieces and then diversified into the world of exclusive goods. Recently I completed a book for a renowned US based publisher featuring Architecture, Automobiles, Horology and Lifestyle. This experience gave me a massive insight into the elite world of luxury. Ultimately if you have the money then companies will create bespoke products to your exact specifications. For me it isn’t really about the materialistic aspect but more about the design. That is why I am always delighted when I receive a press release from MB & F unveiling a new and exciting product.
Even though the majority of people will associate MB & F with timepieces they have evolved into more of a creative lab. Certainly in a precarious watch market this is a very shrewd move on owner Maximilian Büsser’s part. His latest development called the Astrograph is a collaboration with Caran d’Ache who are in the business of manufacturing fine writing instruments. However, as an artist I am more familiar with their range of coloured drawing pencils.
Although I would never contemplate purchasing (even if I could afford it) a product like the Astrograph I can appreciate the attention to detail. Certainly this is more than just a very expensive writing instrument and would be considered by many as a design statement. The idea stems from Maximilian Büsser’s desire as a child to travel space. I doubt if this product would actually be that useful in space but the curvaceous rocket appearance is visually very appealing and the craftsmanship (as always) is absolutely first rate.
This sensational writing instrument is available in three different finishes (high gloss, sandblasted and matt rhodium) and is limited to 99 individually pieces of each. This product is also available as a fountain or rollerball pen.
