Rado D-Star 200

Originating from very humble beginnings in the small Swiss town of Lengnau Rado launched its first watch collection under its own brand name in 1957. During this 55-year period the brand has established itself as a serious player within the highly lucrative watch industry. The company also pioneered numerous innovations including the 1962 Rado DiaStar 1. This iconic timepiece proved to be the first scratch-resistant watch on the market. In the 1980’s (Swatch owned) the use of high-tech ceramic material in watch production became synonymous with the brands identity. It is also notable to state that Rado has been the recipient of many prestigious awards.

My tastes have always gravitated towards larger, masculine watches. On that basis Rado’s delicate, timepieces have never really appealed to me. That is until now. The marvelous D-Star 200 is part of a new range of sport inspired watches. At 44mm x 48.2mm x 15.7mm it’s a well-proportioned watch that I feel will appeal to a wide demographic. It also felt very comfortable & lightweight to wear. This is down to elegant design & choice of material used in production. The D-Star 200 combines hardened steel, titanium & high tech ceramic. Realistically this piece could be worn on any occasion, formal or casual. It is also water resistant to 20 bar (200m).

Aesthetically the design of the watch is very stylish if not unique. Rado’s foray into the highly competitive “Diver” watch arena is a brave move in my opinion. Ultimately a few key players have dominated this market for decades. I feel it’s going to be a monumental task to entice buyers away from Rolex, Omega & Breitling. Never the less there are many notable design features that distinguish the D-Star 200 from its competitors. The classical façade of the dial exudes Retro charm. The glossy black background & the steel display counters (positioned at 3 & 9 o’clock) work in perfect harmony. Also the polished steel hands & indices emanate an understated sophistication. Personally my favorite design detail is the large magnified date window (positioned at 6 o’clock)

Underneath the seducing countenance lies a pretty impressive engine known as the Calibre RC1. Rado have drawn on sister company ETA’s expertise to devise an exclusive automatic chronograph movement. This mechanical marvel measures 13 ¼ lignes & comprises 25 jewels oscillating at a frequency of 28,800vph. Functionally the D-Star 200 is well-equipped displaying hours, minutes, small seconds, and 30-minute and 60-second counters. It also delivers a very respectable 60 hours power reserve. All the workings including the black rotor are visible through the Sapphire case back.
