Diver Watches

There is no doubt that one of the most famous diver watches is the Rolex Submariner. Since its production in 1954 & immortalisation in the Bond movies this iconic timepiece has become a favourite choice for many buyers. If however you are stimulated by newer bolder designs here are five exciting alternatives.

Swiss Military 20,000 Feet

20'000-FEET-black-dial

In early 2009 Swiss Military completely obliterated the world record for water resistance by an automatic diving watch. Previously the Rolex Sea Dweller Deep Sea had held the record. The 20,000 feet is a result of years of dedication from dynamic company owner Frank M. Bürgin. Presently there is no other watch that comes anywhere near the performance of this incredible timepiece. The dimensions on this piece are also impressive measuring an imposing 46mm x 28.5mm. Ultimately this is a professional instrument but in my opinion it is also a great looking watch. Underneath the watch’s robust titanium case lies an exceptionally reliable ETA 7750 chronograph movement.

Ulysse Nardin Black Sea

Ulysse Nardin has huge credentials in the production of timepieces for diving & sailing. The Black Sea perfectly showcases the company’s talents & was recently released at Baselworld 2013. With a diameter measuring 45.8mm this watch will appeal to a wide demographic. Visually the timepiece is pretty stunning & has a very sporty appearance. The case is constructed from stainless steel specially treated with a blue rubber coating using a sophisticated vulcanization process. This not only makes the watch look cool but also makes it highly resistant to withstand the most extreme thermal conditions. A 28 jewel self-winding movement delivering a respectable 42-hour power reserve powers the timepiece.

RJ Romain Jerome Octopus

Over recent years Swiss watchmaker RJ Romain Jerome has produced some highly original & innovative timepieces. The Octopus is their twist on the traditional divers watch. This amazing watch is part of the highly acclaimed DNA series of watches. The case of this fantastic creation measures a diameter of 46mm excluding the two crowns. Aesthetically the brushed steel case works in perfect balance with stabilised Titanic rusted steel bezel. The dial is minimalistic & displays hours, minutes & seconds. I personally feel the simplicity is integral to the success of the design. The company has equipped this watch with a Swiss made automatic movement & has limited this edition to 888 pieces.

U-Boat U-1001

2280

U-Boat is synonymous for producing a range of oversized distinctive timepieces. Recently trends have gravitated towards larger bolder watches & I feel this creative brand is partially responsible. The U-1001 symbolizes the company’s first foray into the diver watch arena. In my opinion they’ve achieved this very successfully. As you would expect the dimensions of this watch are massive measuring an incredible 55mm x 18mm excluding the colossal crown. The case is constructed from non-corrosive lightweight titanium. This not only makes it very durable but also gives it a sleek appearance. The model is available in a choice of three enticing colours, orange, beige & blue.

Azimuth Deep Diver

DeepDiver-1

Singapore based company Azimuth pride themselves on producing uniquely styled watches. In the last few years the company has developed many exciting designs all adhering to the highest production standards. The Deep Diver is their interpretation of the conventional diver watch. Dimensionally this watch is huge measuring a staggering 56.5mm x 46mm. Fortunately the intuitive design & the lightweight case make this a practical option to wear. This superb watch is packed with many functions including a helium escapement valve, anti-magnetic cover & water resistance to 2000m/6562ft. The timepiece also features a uni-directional bezel, big date mechanism & substantial 30mm rubber strap.
