Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Chronograph

The origins of Omega date as far back as 1848 to La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland. The company was originally founded by the dynamic 23 year old Louis Brandt. By the early 1900’s the luxury Swiss watchmaker was producing a staggering 240,000 timepieces a year and employing 800 staff. Presently the company is owned by the formidable Swatch Company and is still considered broadly as one of the most desirable watch brands on the market.

Within the industry Omega is considered as an innovator. Their achievements have included the first divers watch and the worlds only certified marine chronometer wristwatch. The company also lays claim to holding more world records for accuracy than any other watchmaker. All these accomplishments are laudable and gained the brand significant respect from their competitors. From 1995 onwards their association with the highly profitable James Bond franchise has significantly raised their profile.

At Baselworld 2011 the company introduced an exciting range of divers including the wonderful new Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m Chronograph. When I received this incredible watch I was amazed at how elegant it actually looks. The timepiece measures an impressive diameter of 45.5mm excluding the pushers and crown. It also felt very comfortable to wear without any friction incurred by the lugs. I feel this is primarily down to the sophisticated design of the watch and the use of high performance Grade 5 titanium in the construction of the case. Realistically anybody that appreciates well made diver watches will absolutely love this model. Due to the recent popularity of sporty timepieces this creation could be worn for all occasions both formal and casual.

Visually the Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m Chronograph makes a bold statement. The blue ceramic bezel is refined and gives the watch a classy appearance. Amazingly Omega have created the numerals of the bezel out a material called Liquidmetal® This sensational alloy seamlessly blends with ceramic to ensure the watch will maintain its good looks indefinitely. The dial of the watch is composed of two counters positioned at 3 o’ clock and 9 o’ clock respectfully. I love the oversized steel hour and minute hands contrasting with the blue face and delicate hints of orange. Overall I would say the composition is highly effective and very attractive.

In 1999 Omega introduced the ingenious Co-Axial escapement. This groundbreaking and complex technology considerably reduces friction and enhances the timepieces’ mechanical efficiency. The Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m Chronograph incorporates this phenomenal engineering in the Caliber: Omega 9300. This movement features a self-winding chronograph with column wheel mechanism. Ultimately this increases the watch’s precision, durability and stability. Functionally the timepiece is equipped with a chronograph, date, small seconds, helium escape valve and unidirectional rotating bezel. This magnificent watch also has a power reserve of 60-hours.
