Over the last few weeks I have predominantly explored the numerous contemporary timepieces available on the market. I have illustrated how brands have incorporated many style elements from commercial industry into the designs of their watches. Many of these creations have been bold and distinctive and ultimately won’t appeal to a broad demographic. Here are five classical designed watches that display timeless elegance.
Kari Voutilainen 2-Eight
Finnish born Kari Voutilainen has been passionate about watchmaking for thirty years. This amazing atelier has utilized his extensive training to produce some glorious timepieces including the sublime 2-Eight. Every element of his refined creations are entirely designed and manufactured in house. The watch measures 39mm x 11.5mm, which is diminutive by todays standards. These classical proportions will ultimately appeal to the intended market. I love the attention to detail on the understated dial. The guilloché chapter ring works in perfect harmony with the delicately colored mother of pearl. This sensational watch is equipped with a superlative movement and is encased in luxurious 18-carat gold.
Peter Speake-Marin Classic HMS
Peter Speake-Marin’s CV makes incredibly impressive reading. This dynamic English born watchmaker has collaborated with many different companies including Harry Winston, MB&F and Maîtres duTemps. In 2008 he channeled all his efforts into his own company to produce a classical range of watches. The Classic HMS is a great example of his extraordinary talents. With a choice of either 38mm or 42mm case sizes these moderate proportions should appeal to a broad spectrum of buyers. The dial exudes sophistication with its fine guilloche in the centre and circular grained outer ring. These wonderful elements compliment the blued-steel hands and bold Roman numerals. Underneath the splendid façade lies the Calibre Eros 2, 35 jewel automatic-winding mechanical movement.
Ulysse Nardin Marine Chronometer Manufacture Only Watch
Ulysse Nardin have been widely associated with the production of marine chronometers since the late 19th century. The Marine Chronometer Manufacture Only Watch is a completely unique creation and is limited to one piece. With a diameter of 43mm this amazing piece should definitely appeal to the connoisseur. World specialist Donzé Cadrans has handcrafted the white enamel dial on this majestic timepiece. I love the sharp contrasting black roman numerals and the delicate open worked hour/minute hands. Fundamentally the design is minimalistic and cohesive. This entire splendor is encapsulated in marvelous 18-carat rose-gold bevelled case.
Robert Loomes Robin Watch
Robert Loomes is an exceptional watchmaker honouring century old traditions. His brand of the same name is located in the stunning market town of Stamford, England. Predominantly their core business was the repair and restoration of fine watches. The fabulous Robin is their debut model and is aesthetically beautiful. With modest dimensions of 39mm x 12mm the timepiece promotes classical proportions. Underneath the finely sculpted stainless steel case lays a 1950s ebauche movement manufactured by Smiths of Cheltenham. This mechanism is completely stripped, polished and hand decorated. Essentially all elements of this remarkable timepiece are handcrafted in the company’s own workshops.
Lang & Heyne Friedrich III
Lang & Heyne are German watchmakers established in 2001 by Marco Lang and Mirco Heyne. These two kindred spirits have combined forces to produce a range of classical inspired watches including the sophisticated Friedrich III. The case of this stylish timepiece has a modest diameter of 40mm. These measurements will definitely appeal to a wide variety of buyers. The dial combines a black background with silver numerals that gives the piece a chic appearance. I particularly like the delicate polished steel cathedral hands and second hand counter positioned at six o’clock. The company has provided the watch with a highly accomplished Caliber VI movement. This mechanical marvel comprises 19 Jewels (18 rubies and 1 diamond) and oscillates at a frequency of 18,000 bph.
