Sarpaneva Korona 1

With nearly twenty years of experience in the watch industry Stepan Sarpaneva is highly respected and admired in the world of horology.  Originally born in Finland he served his apprenticeships with Piaget, Parmigiani, Vianney Halter and Christophe Claret. This invaluable experience led him to form his own company in 2003. Incredibly he made the bold decision to base himself in Helsinki, Finland a location normally not associated with fine watchmaking.

A few months ago I had the enormous pleasure of reviewing the sublime Moonmachine by MB & F. Sarpanevas creative input was invaluable and highlights his extraordinary talents. From recent conversations with Stepan it is clear how proud he is of this collaboration. It even takes pride of place on the homepage of his website. I am a huge admirer of his range of beautiful watches including the wonderful new Korona 1.

Due to the enormous popularity of the previous two versions of Korana 1 (which are sold out and discontinued) Stepan has designed a superb third edition. The elegant sculpted stainless steel case has remained the same size at 42mm x 9.85mm. Realistically the modest dimensions should appeal to the discerning collector. I should imagine a timepiece displaying these classical proportions would be comfortable to wear for most occasions.

The main difference between the current edition of the Korona 1 and its predecessors is the simplistic design of the dial. Stepan has subtly modified the styling and omitted the date window. Fundamentally I feel this has improved the overall aesthetic of the façade. There are currently four different models in the range all displaying different qualities. My favourite is the natural steel case with marvelous diamond coated blue face. I feel this combination is the most effective because it perfectly showcases the sensational rhodium plated hour and minute hands.

The engine powering this gorgeous watch is a modified Soprod A10 calibre. This self winding mechanism comprises 25 jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 28800 vph (4 Hz) All elements of this superlative movement are entirely handcrafted by Stepan including the tremendous 18K white gold moon face visible on the case back.

Ultimately all of Stepan Sarpaneva’s creations are exclusive and therefore highly desirable. Essentially what you are paying for is a work of art designed by a highly accomplished watchmaker. The Korona 1 is made to order and is priced at: 7,500 EUR (approximately $9,632)
