Although Linde Werdelin was founded in 2002 they didn’t release their first range of watches until 2006. The progressive thinking Morten Linde and Jorn Werdelin currently own the company. Their prime objective was to combine Swiss craftsmanship with Danish design. The result is a range of bold, original and highly coveted timepieces.
I have been an admirer of the company for many years and am stimulated by their incredibly distinctive designs. It is evident that a lot of consideration goes into the styling of each model. In recent conversations with both Morten and Jorn they were very keen for me to try on some of their magnificent timepieces. I think they wanted to illustrate the point that even the best marketing images couldn’t depict the true essence of the watch.
The SpidoLite II Tech Gold was recently released at Baselword 2013 and I believe it was exceptionally well received. Dimensionally the watch measures a robust size of 44mm x 46mm x 15mm. Realistically these proportions should appeal to a broad demographic of potential buyers. A few months ago I tried on a few other timepieces in the series and found them very comfortable to wear. This particular model is constructed from forged carbon, a composite alloy used in the aerospace industry called ‘AWL (Alloy Linde Werdelin) and 18k gold. On that basis I would imagine this watch would feel even more agile on the wrist. Through recent press releases the company has stated this is their “strongest and lightest timepiece to date”
Visually the combination of forged carbon case and 18k gold is absolutely awesome. In my opinion this is one of the most exciting and unique models Linde Werdelin have ever produced. The face of the SpidoLite II Tech Gold is formed from two skeletonized dials that gives the watch a three dimensional appearance. Other eye-catching features include the gold date wheel with contrasting red numerals and the delicate open worked hour/minute hands. Overall the design is very cohesive and wonderfully intricate.
Valérien Jaquet of Concepto has devised a highly accomplished mechanical movement to power the SpidoLite II Tech Gold. The Caliber LW 04 was custom made entirely to Linde Werdelin’s specifications and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz). On the function front the watch features hours, minutes, seconds, date and a 42-hour power reserve. The timepiece is also water resistant to depth of 100m.
The SpidoLite II Tech Gold is equipped with a cool black textured calfskin strap with red stitching and ardillon buckle. This delightful watch is limited to 75 pieces and is priced at CHF 17,500 (approximately $18,828)
