Since I wrote an in depth review of the phenomenal P1 back in April 2013 the company seems to have gained enormous momentum. They have now got a significant following via social media platforms and retail distribution outlets in many countries. Primarily this has been achieved by its founder Dan Niederer’s diligence and determination. Within a very short timescale SevenFriday has become one of the most exciting new brands on the market.
I have spoken with Dan on several occasions to find out the progress of new watches in production. He informed me that he decided to develop existing models rather than spending a lot of time and money creating entirely new timepieces. In the current watch market that seems a very prudent idea. Essentially the configuration of the timepiece can be easily adapted to incorporate new colours and materials. Two great examples are the P3-2 Riviera featuring a Canadian walnut animation ring and the wonderful new P1/2 Bright.
Over the last few months I have seen many pictures of the P1/2 Bright and was really delighted when the actual timepiece arrived. Normally I wouldn’t review the same model twice but in this instance I am happy to make an exception. Dimensionally the proportions are the same size as the P1 measuring a formidable 47mm x 47.6mm (excluding the crown). It is a very comfortable and lightweight watch that I would be happy to wear on a daily basis. I also feel the competitive pricing structure will make it an appealing prospect to many buyers.
Dan has explored many different materials for new interesting tones and textures. The P1/2 Bright has an integrated white rubber animation ring and white silhouette. This gives the timepiece a whole new dynamic and generally the appearance is softer than previous models. Apparently the aesthetics were inspired by the textile industry and the freshness of white cotton. Ultimately the three dimensional aspects of the stunning dial are still integral to the success of the design. I love the subtle injection of gold and grey into the composition. Personally I am a huge fan of white watches so I am exceptionally pleased with the overall result. The fastidious attention to detail makes this timepiece feel a lot more expensive than it actually is.
The P1/2 Bright employs the same Miyota 82S7 21-jewel automatic movement as used in the P1. I raised the question with Dan about the possibility of the company potentially using Swiss movements on future models. Although he didn’t dismiss the idea it was definitely not high on his agenda. I think realistically it still boils down to the price, which keeps these wonderful watches affordable. Over the next few months SevenFriday will slowly release a few more enticing models.
