A few months ago, in July2013 I had the pleasure of writing a couple of articles about RPaige Watches. Coincidentally both editorials (RPaige Watch Hybrid Skeleton and Skeleton Watches) featured made to order skeleton timepieces. Subsequently I have had several conversations with Richard Paige and now have an essence of the man behind the brand. In our discussions he informed me what motivated him to design and develop his own watch company.
For many years Richard sold an eclectic range of watches through his successful retail outlets. He also established the immensely popular TimeZone.com. This website has proved to be an invaluable source of information for watch enthusiasts and set the benchmark for all present day watch blogs. As well as a passion for horology he has designed artwork, jewelry, furniture and glassware all in the iconic Art Deco style. Essentially this period has also been the main inspiration for his stunning Wrocket series of watches. All of the models look fantastic but my personal favourite is Wrocket Black Dial Titanium with red hands.
Last week I received the Wrocket and was amazed at how elegant the timepiece actually looks. With measurements of 44mm x 14mm the watch is well proportioned and should appeal to the majority of buyers. The timepiece also sat perfectly on my wrist without any friction from the lugs. Ultimately this is down to the sophisticated design and use of lightweight titanium in production. In my opinion this is one of the best materials for modern watchmaking because of its appearance and durability. Incredibly this timepiece only weighs 67.3 grams, which makes it an ideal option to wear on a daily basis. Realistically this amazing watch could be worn for both formal and casual occasions.
Visually the Wrocket is absolutely beautiful and unlike any other watch I have ever seen. On this particular model the black dial perfectly contrasts with the large bold numerals. The red hands are sensational and completely seducing to the eye. Richard told me he personally painted them and based them on a Jean Dunand Art Deco screen made in 1925. Other successful elements of the design include the small second counter, contoured lugs and delicate crown with inset Swarovski crystal. Even the RPaige logo plays an integral role in the overall success of the design.
What makes the Wrocket extra special is the choice of movement beneath the case. Richard has diligently sourced vintage pocket watch movements from American companies Elgin and Waltham. This specific timepiece is equipped with a Waltham 17 Jewel manual winding Caliber dating back to 1907. The mechanism has been meticulously restored by the company’s watchmaker and is visible through the sapphire case back. Functionally the timepiece features hours, minutes, seconds and is water resistant to 50 meters.
The glorious Wrocket has a high quality brown leather strap (and additional black one) and engraved titanium buckle. With a suggested retail price of $2,400 this is definitely a hard watch to resist.
