Bremont Supermarine 2000

Bremont is a quintessentially English company situated in the idyllic location of Henley on Thames, South Oxfordshire. Before I emigrated to Australia I spent an enjoyable week in this picture postcard location. Brothers Nick and Giles English originally established the business in 2002 although it took a further five years to release their first series of watches. Their shared vision was to develop a range of high quality mechanical timepieces. They also wanted to ensure that the majority of manufacturing was kept in Britain.

Early this year a friend of mine wanted to buy her husband (an avid watch collector) a surprise 50th birthday gift. She asked my advice about Bremont’s Victory, which contains oak and copper from the original ship. I thought it was a superb selection and asked Giles English’s assistance to locate a suitable retail outlet. In my opinion this limited edition model is a great example of the company’s design and craftsmanship.

A few weeks ago I was invited to a Bremont opening at Gregory Jewellers in the heart of Sydney. The occasion was attended by brand ambassador Charley Boorman and marketed as ‘Watches, Wheels and Whiskey’. The event was a roaring success and several timepieces were sold on the night. The following morning I was invited to try on a few different models including the superb new Supermarine 2000.

The Supermarine 2000 is the latest model in the range and was released earlier in 2013. With a case diameter measuring 45mm it is also the largest in the collection. These chunky masculine dimensions are large enough to make a statement without being too imposing. On that basis I feel this timepiece will attract a large cross section of buyers. I also really enjoyed wearing the watch and felt it sat very comfortably on my wrist. Primarily that is down to the intuitive design and choice of stainless steel in manufacture. Even though the watch felt fairly lightweight I would like to see a limited edition version produced in titanium.

Since I started Total Watch Reviews I have had the opportunity to review a lot of very good diver watches. Aesthetically the Supermarine 2000 certainly holds its own in this category. I love the contrast between the black dial and the large white SuperLumiNova coated indexes. Other distinctive features include the stylized hands, uni-directional rotating bezel and unique crown positioned at 2 o’clock. Overall I would say the watch is visually appealing and the finishing superior.

Beneath the robust exterior lies the highly proficient (COSC certified) chronometer grade Caliber BE-36AE (ETA 2836). This self- winding movement comprises 25 jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Bremont have modified the movement by decorating and skeletising the rotor. The company has also devised a Protective patented anti-shock movement mount. Functionally the watch features hours, minutes, seconds and a day/date facility (visible through a window located at 3 o’clock). The Supermarine 2000 also has a power reserve of 38 hours and is water resistant to a staggering depth of 2000 metres.

The Supermarine 2000 comes with a choice of either an integrated rubber strap or stainless steel bracelet. Priced at: $5,810.
