Recently many websites published comprehensive statistics illustrating the top 20 most popular brands of 2014. There were no surprises really and Rolex topped the poll once again. Apart from independent brands like Patek Philippe and Chopard, the main three groups (Swatch, Richemont, LVMH) dominated the list. When I visited Hall 1 at Baselworld recently I could see the impact these watchmakers have on the industry. At this level it goes beyond simple craftsmanship and becomes a global financial entity. However like Apple (who may feature in future lists) their products are beautifully designed and manufactured.
In complete contrast to the world’s largest (and most profitable) brands, Pierre DeRoche is a small boutique company based in Vallée de Joux, Switzerland. Married couple Carole and Pierre Dubois own the business. Although their love story began 30 years ago they only established Pierre DeRoche in 2004. Over the last few years my primary contact has been with Pierre Dubois. He is a descendant of the famous Dubois-Dépraz family, who has produced many complications for many prestigious watchmakers over the years. This expertise has enabled Pierre and Carole to carve a niche for themselves in a highly competitive environment.
For the last few years I have communicated by email with Pierre Dubois and had never met him until recently. I have always been a fan of his watches and am trying to find him suitable retail outlets in Australia. Even though all his collections are attractive my personal favourites are the TNT models. The Royal Retro 43 Clyde was recently unveiled at Baselworld and has a diameter measuring 43mm. These dimensions are smaller than the Royal Retro Power Reserve (featured in my previous article) and should appeal to the unisex market. Generally I found the watch lightweight and comfortable to wear. Ultimately this is down to innovative case design and choice of titanium/steel/ceramic in production.
Visually the TNT Retro 43 Clyde has a very bold and distinctive appearance. Certainly this design makes a very impressive statement and is completely unique to the brand. What makes this timepiece so special is the multi-layered façade with exposed element of the mechanical movement. I love the way the seconds are presented via six retrograde hands. This makes telling the time a truly invigorating experience. Other features include a black ceramic bezel, blue hour/minute hands, discreet date window (located at 6 o’clock) and sapphire crystal lens. Overall the industrial composition is effective and the finishing is first rate.
Powering the watch is an exclusive Swiss made movement sourced from Dubois Dépraz. This caliber comprises 58-jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz). Each of the mechanical components have been fastidiously finished and decorated by hand. This entire splendor is visible through the sapphire crystal exhibition case back. Functionally the TNT Retro 43 Clyde features hours, minutes, retrograde seconds and date facility. The timepiece also has a power reserve of 40-hours and is water resistant to a depth of 100 metres.
The TNT Retro 43 Clyde is limited to 101 pieces and has a hand stitched black alligator with matching folding clasp. Priced at: $24,280
