One of the first movies I ever went to see at the cinema was Star Wars. I remember the occasion vividly because I was ten years old and allowed to go out unaccompanied. This picture has now become an absolute film classic and was a perfect career launch pad for Harrison Ford. It also was progressive because of various innovative cinematic techniques and numerous ground breaking (for the era) special effects. Even though the sequels and various prequels were very entertaining they never had the same impact of the first instalment.
One of the main characteristics of Star Wars was its meticulous attention to detail and slick appearance. That is why it is not surprising that it bagged six academy awards (including best director and screenplay) and was the highest grossing film of the time. Ultimately this was down to the enormous talents of George Lucas. As well as being an accomplished director, producer and screenwriter he is also very entrepreneurial. For example merchandising has played a key part in this film’s longevity. However all products have been licensed carefully under the meticulous supervision of George Lucas.
A few months ago I communicated with Scott Devon the owner of American luxury watch brand Devon. He informed me of a new Star Wars watch they were just about to release. Although I have never had the pleasure of meeting Scott Devon personally I am a massive admirer of his work and the products he has created. Within a relatively short space of time Devon has become a highly coveted luxury watchmaker. This is a monumental achievement considering the watch industry is dominated by Swiss brands.
Prior to receiving the press release Scott Devon had really hyped up the appearance of their new Star Wars watch. Fortunately he has backed up these claims because the watch looks absolutely amazing. I would imagine that Scott has had a certain amount of creative input but Marko Petrovic is responsible for the main concept. Impressively he has incorporated elements from Darth Vader’s helmet and the distinctive TIE Fighter (the starship of the Imperial fleet). Details like the structural black DLC (diamond like carbon) stainless steel case add a touch of class. Even though the watch is a reworked version of the Tread 1 the composition is still very effective. In a lot of ways I feel the overall aesthetic is reminiscent of the formidable Gotham T1000 by Rebellion. However it is pertinent to mention the price point and technology are completely different.
Although this is not my favourite Devon model (that would be the Steampunke) it is an amazing looking watch. This is why I wasn’t surprised when Scott Devon informed me they have sold all 500 pieces in advance. That is pretty impressive considering the high selling price of: $28,500. It will be interesting to see if George Lucas will ever be seen in public sporting one of these cool timepieces?
