Recently I went to a friends 60th birthday party, which turned out to be a wonderful night. Attending the event were many senior doctors who love the finer things in life. As the conversation turned to watches one of my friends (who is an established psychiatrist) showed me a product he had just bought. The gadget looks like a metallic bracelet but in actual fact is a wrist computer that also double up as a blue tooth headset. Even though I thought the device was interesting I personally prefer to wear a mechanical watch.
Presently the world of horology is going through a turbulent period and profits for many companies have massively declined. However, this hasn’t deterred more creative watchmakers who have risen to the challenge. Certainly I would include the owner of Biatec, Peter Kožár in this category. Over the last decade he has used his passion for watches as a platform to establish his own successful Slovakian based brand.
A few weeks ago Peter Kožár unveiled a new range of exciting timepieces under his Biatec label. One of my personal favourites is the stylish Corsair 01. Dimensionally the timepiece is classically proportioned and has a high quality German 316L steel case measuring 40mm (excluding the crown). Certainly I normally wear much larger watches but concede the watch will appeal to a broad demographic including the rapidly expanding unisex market.
Visually the Corsair 01 has a stylish appearance, which is inspired by the traditional Pilot watch. I love the black lacquered dial with contrasting three-dimensional silver numerals. Other features include oversized silver hour/minute hands, small seconds (located at 9 o’clock), ornate diamond shape crown and anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass. Beneath the elegant exterior lies a Swiss made self winding movement made by Eterna. The caliber 3901A comprises 29-jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. It also has a customized rotor (devised by Biatec), which is visible through the sapphire crystal exhibition case back.
The Corsair 01 has a superior black calf leather strap with matching stainless steel engraved (Biatec logo) buckle. Priced competitively at: €1,380 (approximately $1,519).
