A few days ago on (Thursday November 10th) at the Théâtre du Léman the 16th Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) was hosted. This prestigious event is the watch industries equivalent of the Academy Awards. Ultimately 27 experts from around the world choose the Crème de la crème of fine horology. Even though I don’t agree with all of the judges selections (and feel a lot of innovative brands have been excluded) there is no doubt there are some beautifully designed watches on display. Here are some of my personal favourites.
Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud Ferdinand Berthoud FB1
Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud is an exclusive watchmaker that manufactures and assembles all their watches in Fleurier workshops. Their phenomenal Ferdinand Berthoud FB1 netted the coveted “Aiguille D’or” Grand Prix, which in my opinion was well deserved. The timepiece has a well proportioned octagonal case and is constructed from 18-karat white gold and titanium. Special features include a sublime open worked dial, which delicately exposes the intricate mechanics of the watch. Beneath the luxurious façade lies a complicated manual winding movement that oscillates at 21,600 vibrations per minute.
Grönefeld 1941 Remontoir
Over the last few years Tim and Bart Grönefeld have established a pretty solid reputation for themselves in the world of horology. That is why it is no surprise they were awarded the ‘Mens Watch’ prize for their elegant 1941 Remontoire. This exquisite timepiece exudes modest proportions and has an extravagant 18-karat red gold case measuring 39.5mm x 10.5mm. What makes this creation so appealing is the solid Sterling Silver dial with blue hands and small second indication (located at 6 o’clock). Powering the watch is a mechanical hand winding movement, which is driven by constant force.
Girard-Perregaux Esmeralda Tourbillon
When it comes to fine watchmaking Girard Perregaux really are at the forefront of the industry. Their sensational Esmeralda Tourbillon was designed to commemorate the companies 225th anniversary and was justifiably awarded the ‘Tourbillon Watch’ prize. Dimensionally this timepiece has a well proportioned 18-karat pink gold case that measures 43.7mm x 14.55mm. What makes this model so distinctive is the multi layered dial with three exposed gold bridges. At the heart of the watch is a refined 27-jewel mechanical hand winding movement comprising 310 individual components.
