Approximately 5 years ago I had an interesting meeting with a senior manager who was the official Australian representative for a prestigious brand within the Richemont Group. Although I can’t divulge this gentleman’s name (or the brand) he did preach chapter and verse about the merits of his company. However, it was clear to me that he didn’t have a genuine passion for horology at all. In fact, by his own admission he had taken the position because it paid well and offered his family security. Fortunately, I have met a lot of people since who have a desire to create beautiful timepieces and make a viable living from it. A great example is Sébastien Muller, owner of the Swiss watch brand Brellum.
Even though Sébastien Muller has extensive experience within the world of horology he only established his own brand 10 months ago. His primary objective was to create a range of distinctive timepieces targeted at the discerning watch enthusiast. Essentially Brellum’s debut model called the Duobox Chronometer delivers this in abundance. It also illustrates that fine Swiss craftsmanship and good design doesn’t need to cost a fortune. Certainly for a watch of this caliber (which is powered by a COSC Chronometer certified Valjoux 7750 automatic movement) I would say the price of CHF 2,390 is very competitive.
Within the Duobox Chronometer range my personal favourite is the version with the Deep Blue domed curved dial. This superb characteristic perfectly compliments the highly polished 41.80mm x 16.20mm 316L stainless steel case. Other striking features include raised silver indexes, stylish hour/minute hands (treated with luminescent material) pulsometer scale, small date indication and sporty chronograph counters. The timepiece also has a power reserve of 46-hours and is water resistant to 50 metres.
Overall the Duobox Chronometer is a phenomenal dress watch that could easily be worn for both formal and casual occasions. This watch is also available with a range of different coloured handmade leather straps or a stainless steel mesh bracelet.
