As everyone is aware the watch industry (in general) is experiencing a pretty turbulent time. In fact, within the corporate domain it is a musical chair type of scenario. By that I mean senior executives are moving from one company to another on a frequent basis. Ultimately this instability probably doesn’t instill a lot of confidence in consumers. In contrast smaller independents seem to be flourishing with exciting innovative designs and very attractive pricing structures. A great example can be found in Hong Kong based brand CJR Watches.
As smaller watch companies haven’t got the the massive marketing budgets of groups like Swatch, Richemont and LVMH they are relying on social media for traction. One of the most successful (closed) groups is Premium Mechanical Microbrands, which has over 25,000 members. Even though this forum is still regulated (censored) by administrators it is fairly impartial and delivers great content. Another way small brands like CJR Watches are making their mark is via crowd funding sites like Kickstarter.
CJR Watches was established 3 years ago by Calvin Ng who formerly was a successful mechanical Aerospace engineer. After releasing several distinctive models (including a couple of fantastic Swiss automatic chronographs) the company has launched the phenomenal Commander on Kickstarter. This timepiece is a brilliant example of sophisticated modern design. At first glance it reminded me of the Predator from luxury brand Rebellion. However, this cool watch is powered by a Japanese Miyota 82S7 movement and is an absolute fraction of the price coming in at only $499. When you consider timepieces from SevenFriday and Dietrich are over twice the cost this watch is a bargain.
Visually the Commander punches well above its weight and certainly makes a striking first impression. The multi-layered three dimensional honeycomb patterned dial is a revelation. I also love details like the open worked hour/minutes hands and jet engine turbine inspired second hand wheel indication. Overall this watch is well balanced and the 45mm stainless steel case should appeal to a broad demographic.
