RT & Q Architects House of Shadows

A few years ago I visited Singapore specifically to get access to some very rare timepieces. At the time my website exclusively focused on horology and so visiting this region was a prerequisite. Orchard Road in the CBD (Central Business District) is one of the most opulent retail locations I have ever encountered. Certainly this vicinity is exceptionally glamourous and amazingly clean. A lot of the products in the shops were well beyond my budget although, in contrast there were restaurants in close proximity where you could eat a nutritious satisfying meal for $3. Ultimately this why Singapore is considered one of the most desirable locations in the world to live.

In my mind Singapore is one of the most interesting places to visit and attracts tourists in their droves. Hotspots like the breathtakingly beautiful Gardens by the Bay, luxurious Marina Bay Sands hotel (with rooftop infinity edge pool) and world famous Chinatown district make this city absolutely irresistible. Therefore, it not surprising that this location also boasts some phenomenal residential homes. A great example is the amazing House of Shadows by RT & Q Architects.

RT & Q Architects was established in 2003 by designer Rene Tan and to date they have created 83 sensational homes. In fact, the quality of their work is so high that House of Shadows has been shortlisted at the World Architecture Festival 2017. As you would expect the competition is pretty fierce but this single family residence is extraordinary. The main fabric of the dwelling is exposed concrete, which in todays world is becoming the material of choice. However, the house doesn’t in anyway appear cold because of the extravagant use of timber and glass. For me this really is a master class in contemporary building design and every minute detail has been considered meticulously.

House of Shadows really does offer the owners the highest quality of tranquil and harmonious living. In essence the same materials (used externally) like exposed concrete, and timber have been used to great effect internally also. Added touches like the industrial mesh steel balustrades, bespoke cabinetry and minimalistic suspended lighting are inspired. This wonderful property also has a magnificent pool, which is surrounded by mature trees. Without a doubt RT & Q Architects have created the perfect sanctuary for their discerning clients.
