A few days ago my son turned nine and we decided to have a family day together. As it was his special day we allowed him to make the choice. Amazingly he opted for a burger (with fries and soda) at a popular fast food restaurant followed by a suitable movie. Fortunately, the film we all decided on was a new release called ‘Johnny English Strikes Again’ starring the charismatic Rowan Atkinson. Obviously, this is a spoof of the popular James Bond series but it is very well written and executed. Interesting the protagonist describes himself as ‘Old School’ and is oblivious to modern technical devices. In fact, rather than a state of the art hybrid he chose a vintage petrol Aston Martin and refuses the standard issue iPhone. It might all sound far-fetched but turntables are making a revival and so are mechanical watches.
One brand I have always been very impressed with is Sea-God, which is owned by Enzo Palazzolo. The company name is inspired by the 1930 Hollywood movie appropriately called the “The Sea God” (directed by George Abbott with Richard Arlen and Fay Way). Prior to establishing the business, Enzo worked in communications. However, his passion for horology and innovative design prompted him to relocate to Switzerland. Certainly, this move was worthwhile because he now created a very popular and successful micro-brand.
As a writer, my focus is on delivering high-quality content about well-designed products. That is why Sea-God has always been on my radar because they manufacture timepieces that are built to last. There are far too many generic styles watches on the market and that is why it is refreshing to see something different. The Black & White DATE is a modern twist on the professional diver with a dash of Italian flair. I love the cool white enamel dial with a contrasting black ceramic Bidirectional rotating bezel. Other features include a distinctive skeleton hour/minute hands, date indication (located at 3 o’clock) ruthenium coated indexes and specially patented crown (with tightening system).
Beneath the robust 46mm 316L stainless steel (black DLC coated) lies an ETA 2824-2 self-winding movement. The calibre comprises 25-jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. This refined mechanism has an incabloc shockproof Glucydur balance and a power reserve of 42-hours. Functionally the Black & White DATE features, hours, minutes, seconds, date indication and is water resistant to a depth of 300-metres. As a final touch, the watch has a bespoke super white rubber and customised specially engraved stainless steel (black DLC coated) buckle.
