Since I began writing about watches approximately eight years ago the emergence of small micro brands has expanded exponentially. Recently when I visited Malaysia I discussed this topic with a good friend of mine called Leong Wong. He was formerly the editor for the of Esquire Magazine (Singapore/Malaysia) and I used to write for him on a regular basis. As we both are champions of independent watchmakers there was a lot of common ground. Predominantly, at that time I focused on Swiss mechanical watches. However, these days Japanese alternatives are very popular and very competitively priced. A great example is the Power Racing Black by Zoid.
A few weeks ago I featured a really cool timepiece on Total Design Reviews called the Racing Skeleton from Achtung. The marketing and distribution for this brand is handled by TVG (TERRA VIVENDI GROUP) who also represent Zoid. My contact in this organisation is Alex Neo, who certainly has great taste in watches. The Power Racing Black is limited to only 38-pieces worldwide and definitely makes a bold first impression.
When I first set eyes on the Power Racing Black it reminded me of the P51 by REC. In reality, this is because of the twin dials that are inspired by automobiles. However, this offering from Zoid has a slightly larger diameter of 46mm and sporty appearance. The Power Racing Black also uses a range of different materials like forged carbon and DLC (diamond-like carbon) black coated steel, which give it an industrial aesthetic. Other features include sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, ornate etched crown and quick-release calf leather strap. Overall if you love bold contemporary timepieces this model is an ideal choice.
As I mentioned before a lot of microbrands like Achtung, Lytt Labs, REC, SevenFriday (to name a few) decided to use Japanese made Miyota movements rather than Swiss alternatives. The main reason was availability, affordability and the opportunity to customise to their own specifications. Zoid has followed the same route and have equipped the Power Racing Black with a self-winding calibre 9300. This 26-jewel mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and is visible through the sapphire crystal exhibition case back. Functionally the watch features minutes, hours, date, date and power reserve indication.
