As well as being a multi-published author and writer I am also a designer. This passion led me to create a range of bespoke watches. Obviously, I’ve had a lot of help along the way from friends like Ben Birkett (specialist watch restorer) and Frank Heydrich (Jet engineer). Originally, making watches was to appreciate the challenges that brands encounter. However, now I am actually making unique pieces for watch enthusiasts. This is a service that Richard Paige has been offering customers for years.
Over the last few years, I have featured Richard Paige’s brand RPaige Watches on Total Design Reviews numerous times. All of his timepieces are inspired by the glorious ‘Art Deco’ period that was very popular in the 1920s, especially in the United States. One of my favourite collections is the ‘Speakeasy’, which pays homage to architectural masterpieces like the Chrysler and Empire States buildings. These incredible structures still dominate Manhattan’s skyline.
When you purchase a timepiece from Richard Paige expect to get something really special. I managed to get my hands on a limited edition 44mm Speakeasy watch (numbered 28/50) with an antique ‘Niello’ dial depicting Iris flowers. For those that aren’t familiar with the term ‘Niello’, it is normally a black mixture (composed of sulphur, copper, silver, and lead) used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal (typically silver). Other features include a delightful skeleton dial ring with roman numeral numbers, chrome “Chrysler Building” style hour/minute hands and an oversize top-mounted crown.
At the heart of the watch is a German-made ‘HiTech’ hardened Aluminum
hand winding movement (based on the Swiss Unitas) supplied and created by Torsten Nagengast. This calibre comprises 17-jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour and is visible through the exhibition case back. Functionally, the Speakeasy features hours and minutes. The watch also has a power reserve of approximately 40-hours and is water-resistant to a depth of 50-metres.
As a final touch, the watch is presented on a high-quality tan leather strap with complimentary steel buckle.
