Bomberg BOLT-68 NEO AUTOMATIC ANNIVERSARY SILVER

Recently a good friend of mine that resides in Sydney contacted me for some professional advice. As a watch fanatic, he’s amassed a large collection of unique timepieces mostly on the larger size. This passion stimulated him and a fellow watch appreciated establishing their own brand. Presently they are only in the prototyping phase but were able to send me an example. The aesthetic is influenced by watchmakers such as Franck Muller and Richard Mille. Overall it’s a pretty decent first attempt. However, to get something like this to market is a whole different entity. Ultimately you’re looking at finding decent reliable manufacturers and distributors. One company that has achieved this is the Swiss lifestyle brand Bomberg. They are presently celebrating their 10th anniversary by unveiling a very special limited edition called the BOLT-68 NEO AUTOMATIC ANNIVERSARY SILVER.

It’s fair to say that I am a huge fan of Bomberg and love their approach to watchmaking. I also applaud them for not falling into the pretentious trap of labelling themselves as a serious watchmaker. Wearing a watch should be fun and in my opinion, good design should occur organically. That’s why I was very excited to hear Bomberg were in the process of creating a very special 10th-anniversary commemorative watch. I first received visuals of the BOLT-68 NEO AUTOMATIC ANNIVERSARY SILVER a few weeks ago. The bold aesthetic certainly stimulated my interest and in the metal, the watch definitely doesn’t disappoint.

Generally, I favour massively oversized watches so when I heard the BOLT-68 NEO AUTOMATIC ANNIVERSARY SILVER only has a 42.5mm I had mixed feelings. However, in reality, the actual piece appears much larger in the metal and actually wears like a 45mm. Ultimately, this is down to bold industrial design, which should appeal to a very broad demographic. The inspiration for this piece is Mexican culture and its celebration of life and death. I love the meticulous engravings on the case and the bracelet pay homage to Yaxche (Mayan Tree of Life). Other exquisite details include a dial embossed with a stylized skull motif (synonymous with the brand) large SuperLuminova® treated indexes and Bomberg signature hands. The timepiece also features a bold top-mounted crown and anti-reflective sapphire crystal.

For this extra special timepiece, Bomberg has selected to use an automatic movement from exclusive Swiss manufacturer Soprod. The Calibre P024 (based on the ETA 2824-1) comprises 25-jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. This refined mechanism is visibly showcased via the sapphire crystal exhibition case back. Functionally the BOLT-68 NEO AUTOMATIC ANNIVERSARY SILVER features hours, minutes, seconds and date indication positioned at 6 o’clock. The timepiece also has a power reserve of approximately 38 hours and is water-resistant to a depth of 100-metres.

As a perfect finale, the BOLT-68 NEO AUTOMATIC ANNIVERSARY SILVER is presented on a durable steel bracelet. Additionally, this special commemorative limited edition (200 pieces) has a luxurious black skull leather reusable box, along with a t-shirt specially designed for the occasion by Mexican fashion company Ay Güey! With a competitive retail price of $1,995 I feel you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck.
