BOMBERG Metropolis Mexico City

A few days I returned from an epic trip to Italy. It’s the first time I’ve visited this amazing country in 15 years and never in Winter. I was fortunate enough to visit places like Bologna, Firenze, Lake Como, Rimini, Roma, Verona and Venezia. These cities are steeped in history and there’s nothing that compares to Australia. Whilst I was there I got the opportunity to meet the co-owners of Desserto® Adrian Lopez Velarde and Marte Cázare at a film premiere of ‘Slay’ in Milano. These young Mexican pioneers have developed a revolutionary plant-based alternative to leather made from Nopal Cactus. The reason I mention this story is due to the Mexican connection. The subject of this review is a very special limited edition watch from Bomberg called Metropolis Mexico City.

Several weeks ago I saw renderings of some of the watches from the new Metropolis collection and therefore was highly anticipating their release. Bomberg Mexico City is a vibrant metropolis that screams, “live for the moment”! For that reason, they have released three models displaying a large skull. This motif is a daily reminder to seize the day and live life to the fullest. Certainly, that’s a great motto, which I’m a huge advocate of.

The Metropolis Mexico City adopts the BOLT-68 NEO 43 mm stainless steel case with black DLC coating. Due to the bold design (with the crown positioned at 12 o’clock), I feel the watch wears slightly larger and more like many 45mm pieces I’ve reviewed. I tested it comprehensively for a few days and felt it sat very comfortably on the wrist. What makes this watch so special is the colourful “grand tapisserie” dial with a red and blue skull. This amazing feature compliments the large luminous coated indexes and Bomberg’s signature hands. Overall the design is very distinctive and the finishing first rate.

At the heart of the watch is a high-quality automatic movement sourced from Swiss manufacturer Selita. The Calibre SW200 comprises 26 jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. This exquisite mechanism is visibly showcased via the sapphire crystal exhibition window. Functionally the Metropolis Mexico City features hours, minutes, seconds and date indication at 6 o’clock. The watch also has a power reserve of 41 hours and is water resistant to a depth of 100 metres.

As a perfect finishing touch the Metropolis Mexico City is presented on a black silicone strap (with the word BOMBERG highlighted in colours) and a black DLC-coated stainless steel pin buckle. The watch also comes in a cool collector’s edition Skull case.
