Azimuth “56 BIT Singapore Commemorative Edition”

For the last 6 months I have been working on a very unique book about modern dress watches. For years I have worn and created XL timepieces with contemporary aesthetics. These type of pieces are great with casual attire but not that practical for tailored couture. Presently, the fashion for gentleman is to wear very fitted suits and jackets (in some instances a size too small). Ultimately, this means that watches with moderate proportions and slimline cases are the only sensible choice. When researching for this book I wanted to offer the reader diversity. Initially I overlooked Azimuth because they are synonymous with bold Avante-Garde designs. However, they also have created more classical type watches such as the “56 BIT Singapore Commemorative Edition”.

Last year in 2021 Singapore celebrated its 56th Birthday and Azimuth co-founder Chris Long wanted to commemorate this significant event with a very special timepiece. On this occasion they have reinterpreted one of their most popular models called the ‘Back in Time’. This piece is the brands modern twist on the classical dress watch. Over the years there have been many different variants including a special 45th birthday model released in 2010. The latest version named the “56 BIT Singapore Commemorative Edition” has more playful appearance.

Originally when Chris Long mentioned the overall concept of this watch I was very intrigued to discover the brand have partnered with Garfield. This interesting feline character was created by US cartoonist Jim Davis in 1972. Incredibly Garfield have achieved around $1 billion worth of merchandise in 111 countries. The “56 BIT Singapore Commemorative Edition” depicts Garfield positioned in side profile in a fencing outfit. Normally, I am not a fan of novelty watches but feel Azimuth have created the right balance here.

In addition to the steel and cream dial 56-piece version (distributed via authorised retailers worldwide) Azimuth created a very special (exclusive 15-piece) model of the “56 BIT Singapore Commemorative Edition”. This amazing timepiece was only available to valued customers and a few fortunate journalists. What makes this model so special ‘Mother of Pearl’ dial and black PVD treated stainless case. Another really cool feature is the raised red 56 numerals highlighting the 56th anniversary. Powering the watch is in-house modified Selita automatic winding movement. The Caliber SW200 comprises 26-jewels and oscillates at frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
