Several years ago I visited a U-Boat dealership in the UK and they showed me a newly released watch called the U-1001. I vividly remember being amazed by this timepiece mostly because of the overall size. This piece has a gigantic 55mm Grade 5 sandblasted titanium case that was designed to make a bold impression. Additionally, there is a huge crown and helium release button that increase the proportions even more. However, the pièce de résistance in my opinion is the large aluminium presentation case with a central porthole window. Since 2010 there have been many incarnations of the U-1001 including the refined Classico 1001 Ref 8038.
The brand owned by Italo Fontana started as a fashion label and became synonymous with oversized models. In fact, at the time they were very progressive because no one else was producing similar-sized watches. However, as the market changed other brands released equal-sized watches that in my opinion showed more design merit. This I feel was a catalyst for U-Boat focusing more on aesthetics rather than purely case size. Therefore, I think it was a strategic move to create smaller watches with a more sophisticated appearance. The 47mm Grade 5 titanium Classico 1001 Ref 8038 perfectly illustrates this.
It’s pertinent to mention that the Classico 1001 Ref 8038 isn’t one of U-Boat’s latest releases. However, I feel the overall design of this watch, deserves an honourable mention. Over the years I have featured numerous professional diver watches on Total Design Reviews. This particular model is definitely one of my favourites. Features like engraved (inside out) bezel, sculpted crown cap, helium release valve (9.45) and easy release lug system are inspired. I also love the 6.4mm laser-etched sapphire crystal that is visible from the side profile. Other details include two superimposed dials, with bold blue numerals (treated with superluminova) and U1001 white text in high relief. Overall this piece has a very modernistic and architectural façade.
At the heart of the watch is a refined Swiss automatic movement. The Calibre U-28 (ETA 2824) comprises 25 jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. This timepiece has a solid titanium case back with meticulous engraving. Functionally the Classico 1001 Ref 8038 features hours, minutes, seconds and date indication positioned at 4 o’clock. The watch also has a power reserve of 38 hours and is water resistant to a depth of 1001 metres. As a perfect finishing touch the timepiece is presented on a high-quality rubber strap with titanium buckle.
