MECEXP MS1001 Flyback

In recent decades the watch industry has been dominated by traditional mechanical movements. At the higher end of the scale, discerning collectors go crazy for timepieces with flying tourbillions, minute repeaters, moon phase and perpetual calendar indications. They also need to be encased in luxurious materials such as gold and platinum with modest proportions. That’s why it was a pleasant surprise when Scott Devon disrupted the market with his innovative Californian-made belt-driven time instruments. The only problem was they were still beyond the reach of most buyers. Ultimately it was a similar scenario with HD3 Slyde who offered customers a luxury Swiss-made watch with interchangeable digital interfaces. Finally, MECEXP feels they have devised a more financially viable solution in the form of the MS1001 Flyback.

MECEXP is the brainchild of Jason Zhang and was established in 2019. Combining his love for horology and experience in OEM (original equipment manufacturer) orders was a great starting basis for the brand. However, the real catalyst was when Jason discovered a 3D printer dedicated to Leadscrew at an exhibition. For those like me not that familiar with this terminology leadscrew is a type of mechanical power transmission used in machines for high-precision actuation. Essentially It converts rotational motion into linear motion. Jason instantly recognised the potential of displaying time in this cool format and the MS1001 Flyback was born.

Normally when it comes to affordable watches the quality is normally comprised. However, I can honestly say after inspecting the $451 MS1001 Flyback every component and detail has been meticulously executed. The rectangular 48mm x 38mm x 14.5mm satin-brushed steel case has a premium 3D architectural aesthetic normally only found on very expensive watches. Hours and minutes are displayed via two inclined sapphire crystal windows in a linear format. This feature is highly effective and really gives the watch a modern appearance. In future, I would like to see MECEXP experiment with different materials like forged carbon, magnesium, titanium and zirconium.

Powering the MS1001 Flyback is a sophisticated CNC motor driving electronic system with a
battery capacity of 270mAh. If you wanted a Swiss mechanical version with a linear display the HYD 3 and Christophe Claret X-Trem would be potential candidates. However, it’s pertinent to mention both these amazing watches would set you back well over a hundred thousand dollars due to the complexity of the mechanical movements. Certainly, I’m not making comparisons but offering a different perspective. Jason Zhang is very transparent about his aspirations for MECEXP and describes the MS1001 Flyback as a fashion accessory. Personally, I feel he is massively understating his achievement as this watch (in my opinion) is an exceptional example of great design.

As a perfect finale, the MS1001 Flyback is presented on a choice of Nylon + Leather or
Fluororubber straps with complimentary steel buckles.
