CODE41’s whole philosophy is to make the art of fine watchmaking accessible to all. The company was established in 2016 by progressive thinker Claudio D’Amore in Lausanne, Switzerland. Interestingly CODE41 is the first community mechanical watchmaking brand. From the outset, the brand has prided itself in involving the community in every stage of the creative process. Ultimately they guarantee total transparency on the origin of all the components including its pricing structure. Certainly, this is a refreshing change from a consumer’s perspective. Recently, I received a press release unveiling a very exciting new model called the Anomaly Evolution ED2.
Two years after the success of the Anomaly Evolution the company have released a second incarnation. This version shares the DNA of the original model with an additional choice of colours. The watch will be limited to 300 Edition pieces and will be available for pre-order from the 21st of June 2023 until the 19th of July 2023. Dimensionally the watch is small by modern standards and has a modest diameter of 41mm. These proportions should appeal to appreciators of traditional scale timepieces or potentially the unisex market. Due to the size, it would also be practical to wear to casual and formal occasions like gala dinner events.
Prices for the Anomaly Evolution ED2 start at $1,170 which is exceptionally good value for a watch of this calibre. Aesthetically the watch has a very cool 3D appearance that’s normally found in much more expensive models. I love the multi-layered dial that gives the recipient a glimpse of the Elaboré/Special mechanism. This is perfectly showcased in the architectural framework. Other quality features include Luminova on hands and indexes plus anti-reflective sapphire crystal. Overall I feel CODE41 have created a very distinctive watch that has been perfectly executed.
Originally CODE41 soured movements from suppliers such as ETA and Miyota. However, due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, these became much more difficult to acquire. Therefore the brand opted for a self-winding movement with an integrated Incabloc shock absorber supplied by Swiss manufacturer Selita to power the Anomaly Evolution ED2. The Calibre SW200 comprises 26 jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. This Elaboré/Special mechanism is visibly showcased via the sapphire crystal exhibition case back. Functionally the Anomaly Evolution ED2 features hours, minutes, central seconds and date indication. The watch also has a power reserve of 38 hours and is water resistant to a depth of 100 metres.
