A few weeks ago, I got the chance to review Apple’s magnificent Ultra Watch. Since then I have been wearing it for all sports activities including the gym and tennis matches. There’s no disputing that this is an exceptional device that is crammed full of technological features. It also is outstanding from a design point of view and exceptionally comfortable on the wrist. For that reason, I can see why this could be a necessity for appreciators of the brand. However, if you are passionate about horology the Historiador Gran Premio De Cuba from Cuervo y Sobrinos might be more to your tastes.
My appreciation for Cuervo y Sobrinos dates back to 2015 when the brand was under different ownership. However, it is pertinent to mention that CEO/Partner was also a former Manager Director of the company from 2004-2014. Subsequently, he abbreviated the business name CyS SA presumably to make it more appealing to a younger demographic. Under his helm, there have been many distinctive models including the Historiador Gran Premio De Cuba. This particular model is inspired by the historical 1957 Cuban Grand Prix, (AKA Gran Premio de Cuba).
A lot of brands are producing heritage models at the moment and I feel the Historiador Gran Premio De Cuba is a great example. If you like dress-style watches the proportions of this model will really appeal. With a stainless steel case measuring 42mm x 12mm, this timepiece is small by modern standards. For that reason, I’m sure it will appeal to the unisex market. Personally, I love the Tropical red and cream dial with a bold black tachymeter. Other features include large white (black outlined) numerals and Leaf shaped hands with Super-LumiNova®. Overall the composition is very refined and the production quality is first-rate.
At the heart of the watch is a modified Valjoux 7750 self-winding movement. The Caliber CYS 8101 comprises 27 jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. For this model CyS have opted for a solid engraved Gran Premio de Cuba case back rather than an exhibition showcasing the mechanism. Functionally the Historiador Gran Premio De Cuba features hours, minutes, small seconds, tachymeter, telemeter and a chronograph. The watch also has a power reserve of 48 hours and is water resistant to a depth of 30 meters.
As a perfect finishing touch the perforated matte leather strap with complimentary stainless steel folding buckle, features an openworked CyS-branded clasp.
The Historiador Gran Premio De Cuba is limited to 162 pieces and competitively priced at $4,255.
