Mr Jones Watches ‘The Golden Hour’

Several decades ago I graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a BA honours degree in illustration. Subsequently, I embarked on a freelance career and worked with high-profile clients such as the BBC, Radio Times and British Telecom. That’s why I was fascinated by the intricate Art Deco-inspired works of Andy Wilx. He was awarded ‘Best International Artist by the Global Artist Agency. Andy pays homage to the patterns of William Morris, in the form of decorative and crisp line work. He also incorporates screen printing and traditional signwriting techniques into his compositions. As well as selling limited edition prints he’s also collaborated with MJW (Mr Jones Watches) on ‘The Golden Hour’.

Previously I have reviewed an exquisite watch called ‘The Silent Thief’ on Total Design Reviews. For a Swiss mechanical watch assembled in London, you really can’t get much better bang for your buck. To say I was impressed by the overall quality of this timepiece would be a massive understatement. For that reason, I was very keen to work with Mr Jones Watches again. After several discussions, we decided that ‘The Golden Hour’ (priced at $795) is a great example of the brand’s work. It also enticed me because of British artist Andy Wilx’s involvement.

Within the parameters of affordable watchmaking, the dial is probably one of the largest assets. MJW has become synonymous with its distinctive illustrative style timepieces. ‘The Golden Hour’ was inspired by the classic children’s novel, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, first published in 1911. The central theme from Andy Wilx is dominated a large ‘Worker Bee’ motif that is normally associated with cities like Manchester in the UK. What makes this watch so remarkable is the innovative way time is displayed. A large red flower indicates minutes and there is a red sundial that points to the hours. Seconds revolve beneath the bee giving a sense of motion in the illustrated garden. Overall the composition is absolutely exquisite and the meticulous attention to detail is first-rate.

Beneath the delightful 45mm stainless steel (black PVD coated) façade lies a Swiss automatic movement sourced from Selita. The Calibre SW200 comprises 26 jewels and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. This refined mechanism is visibly showcased via the mineral crystal exhibition case back. Functionally ‘The Golden Hour’ features hours, minutes and seconds. The watch also has a power reserve of approximately 40 hours and is water resistant to a depth of 50 metres.

As a perfect finale ‘The Golden Hour’ is presented on a high-quality black leather strap with a complimentary stainless steel buckle. For more information about this amazing watch follow the link.
